Hi, my name is Gareth and I’m one of the 2020/21 Cyber Research Interns. My background is as a Computer and Cyber Forensics student at the University of Gloucestershire.
Over the 12-month internship I have undertook two primary projects that highlight areas of future interest for Northrop Grumman. The projects have included research surrounding topics such as software development, cyber security and machine learning. In my spare time I enjoy flying virtual aircraft, coincidentally, the majority of which are made by Northrop Grumman.
My advice to anyone considering this internship would be to apply, even if software development is not your primary area of expertise, as the internship management is always there to guide you in the right direction if you need it.
During the first two years of University, I attended multiple cyber security and forensic conventions where Northrop Grumman were also present. From speaking with their staff I learnt that the company worked on a wide variety of projects within cyber, many of which I would never have considered as a career path before. Upon hearing about the intern program, I decided that I wanted to take the leap and explore this new and exciting opportunity.
My time as a Research Intern enabled me to develop a wide array of both technical and soft skills. In line with the projects that I have undertaken over the year, I have predominantly enhanced my skills in software development as well as machine and deep learning. Alongside this, I have broadened my knowledge and personal skills in the areas of agile project management, technical and non-technical presentations, and critical thinking.
One of the best features of Northrop Grumman for me has been the opportunity to expand my knowledge and skills freely. Whilst I did undertake set projects, it was down to my own discretion to research, experiment and develop the final product. This has allowed me to build the independence and confidence needed to take on the unknown and not solely rely on the direction of others.
After the internship, I am returning to university for my final year of study after which I will be joining the Northrop Grumman graduate scheme.
