Meet Sim, a Graduate

I studied a BSc (Hons) Computing at Plymouth University and on joining the Northrop Grumman Graduate Programme I have worked on a project that’s Java based  – without knowing Java prior to this scheme! As a graduate I’m focusing on upskilling in as many areas as possible within my project and I also have the ability to look into other roles, such as testing, which is a bonus with Northrop Grumman.

Completing the scheme during covid lockdowns was difficult at the beginning due to working remotely but I’ve learned new ways of communicating and have even met team members and other employees outside of work hours in a covid-safe manner.

I suffered with negative self-talking and lack of confidence during my first 3 months in the scheme. My line manager supported me and my project members were open to teaching me everything and anything I wanted, so I developed personally and professionally.

The company supported my mental health, which had suffered due to remote working.  I received professional support and my line manager helped me. Northrop Grumman’s graduate programme is there to help people develop in every way.

I’m also part of some Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), which has been a brilliant experience.  ERGs are employee led internal networks to share ideas, generate understanding and support the company’s diverse and inclusive environment for all employees.  The ERGs have helped me a lot as it’s allowed me to learn more about the company, as well as being able to input my ideas for certain things and help with events.

In addition to further developing my technical skills, I will research other roles, such as testing or consultancy.  I also want to get more involved in the ERGs so that the knowledge and experience I have from creating/holding my own Women in STEM support system during university is used to help them with future events.
