Northrop Grumman Defense Systems is seeking a TEMPEST Engineer / Principal TEMPEST Engineer for the Strategic Deterrent Systems (SDS) division Engineering and Manufacturing team. This role will be in Huntsville, AL or Roy, UT and will provide enabling support for all business areas within the SDS portfolio. Northrop Grumman supports the Air Force’s sustainment, development, production and deployment of hardware and system modifications for Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) Ground and Airborne Launch Control Systems, Launch Facilities, and associated infrastructure.
What You’ll Get To Do:
This position is for a systems engineer familiar with design and testing for TEMPEST compliance. The selected candidate will be supporting efforts within the Electromagnetic Environmental Effects (E3) team.
- Make significant contributions to a team of engineers in TEMPEST testing and analysis
- Conduct TEMPEST testing in accordance with NSTISSAM TEMPEST/1-92 and CNSSAM TEMPEST 01-02
- Support the program’s TEMPEST SME – participating in frequent customer interactions
- Assist in the development of the TEMPEST Control Plan
- Develop TEMPEST test plans and test procedures
- Review TEMPEST testing results
- Provide consultation on TEMPEST best practices with various Integrated Product Teams (IPTs)
Basic Qualifications:
This requisition may be filled at either the Engineer Systems level or Principal Engineer Systems level.
TEMPEST Systems Engineer: A minimum of 2 years of related experience with a bachelor’s degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics or Software discipline from an accredited university; 0 Years with Masters
Principal TEMPEST Systems Engineer: A minimum of 5 years of related experience with a bachelor’s degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics or Software discipline from an accredited university; 3 Years with Masters; 0 Years with PhD.
Required for Both Levels:
- General understanding of some of the following TEMPEST Specs: NSTISSAM TEMPEST 1/92, CNSSAM TEMPEST 1-13, CNSSAM TEMPEST 01-02, AMSG 720B, AMSG 788A, AMSG 784, BTR:01:210, NATO SDIP-27
- Understanding of how to ensure systems and equipment meet NSTISSAM TEMPEST 1/92, CNSSAM TEMPEST 1-13, CNSSAM TEMPEST 01-02 and other TEMPEST requirements
- Must be a US Citizen with an active DoD Secret Clearance with an investigation date within the last 6 years
- Must have the ability to obtain special program access, within a reasonable amount of time as determined by the company to meet its business needs
These Qualifications Would be Nice to Have:
- Ability to present engineering findings orally and in written technical reports and presentations
- Experience in fast-paced work environment and ability to work in a team environment
- Active Top-Secret Clearance with an investigation date in the last 6 years or ability to obtain
- Certified TEMPEST Professional Level I (CTP-I)
- Experience conducting instrumented TEMPEST surveys
- Familiar with NONSTOP TEMPEST testing
- Prior experience reviewing TEMPEST Test Plans and Test Reports in accordance with the guidelines specified in NSTISSAM TEMPEST 1-92 and CNSSAM TEMPEST 01-02
- Prior experience testing in a certified TEMPEST Lab
- Ability to provide design guidance and recommendations on shielding, filtering, grounding; trace routing, PCB board layer stack-up, cabling, and I/O protections to facilitate compliance
- Ability to use design simulation tools to analyze shielding performance, filter design, and identify potential vulnerabilities from schematics or board layout deficiencies
- Experience reviewing and maintaining TEMPEST design guidelines
- Ability to solve problems and drive tasks to completion

This position’s standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.
