In the Footsteps of World War II
by Crystal Nguyen
Photographer Alan Tran’s father handed him a video camera when he was 9 years old, sparking his interest in film and photography.
Today, Alan has channeled his lifelong passion, talented eye and ability to capture visually compelling stories into a thriving photography career at Northrop Grumman. Alan can also be found behind the camera in his free time, volunteering as a photographer for nonprofits, including Rescue 22, Act of Valor and the Best Defense Foundation, that support U.S. service members and their families.
Most recently, Alan had the opportunity of a lifetime to travel to Normandy, France, through the Best Defense Foundation’s Battlefield Return Program. Alan documented the return of 43 World War II veterans to the country they liberated almost eight decades ago. Follow the unforgettable journey through Alan’s lens.

Army Nurse Corps
The average age of the veterans was 100 years old. U.S. Army Corps Nurse Betty Huffman-Rosevear, pictured here, celebrated her 102nd birthday on the trip.
The French Legion of Honor
During one of the ceremonies, U.S. Army veteran Bob Gibson, pictured here, was presented with the French Legion of Honor, the highest French order of merit.
Flyover
The trip included visits to memorials, cemeteries and battle sites as well as a flyover, pictured here, at La Fière, a battle site in Normandy, to commemorate the 82nd Airborne Division.
Paying Tribute
During the trip, the veterans paid tribute at the graves of fallen soldiers. Alan said the opportunity to capture these moments was an honor he will forever remember.
Parade in Carentan, France
The town of Carentan, France, welcomed the veterans with a parade through the exact streets the Allied forces liberated almost 80 years ago. “It was like the Beatles came to town,” said Alan of the crowds.
