STEM Outreach

We are passionate about inspiring future generations in STEM subjects and careers.

Next Generation STEM

Science-based expertise is at the heart of our high-technology culture, society and economy. The shortage of science-based talent in our workplaces and universities represents a serious challenge for our industry. Science-based expertise is at the heart of our high-technology culture, society and economy.

We work with partners to give young people the experiences and opportunities to inspire them in science and technology and so open the door to new future career opportunities and we support leading edge projects and research at undergraduate and graduate level.

STAAR

As part of our commitment to encouraging, inspiring and supporting young people to engage in STEM subjects and careers, Northrop Grumman in the UK funds the Royal Airforce Museum’s Summer Time Advanced Aerospace Residency programme (STAAR). Working alongside the Museum’s team we have developed and deliver an unforgettable programme for children excited about discovering the extraordinary applications of a STEM education.

STAAR is designed to give young people a unique experience to understand advanced aerospace systems engineering and encourage them to take up further studies and consider careers in STEM-related fields. Fourteen- and fifteen-year-olds in the UK spend a week at RAF Cosford, learning about aerospace technologies and engineering with practical activities and experiences.

The STAAR summer camp is hosted by the Cosford and the Defence School of Aeronautical Engineering at RAF Cosford with support and input from Northrop Grumman.

CyberFirst

We work with CyberFirst North West to inspire interest in cyber-security careers. CyberFirst schools link up with industry leaders giving them the opportunity to access information and resources that never would have been available otherwise. We illustrate how studies translate to careers in Cyber and the varied opportunities that STEM subjects lead to.

Through our partnership with CyberFirst, we provide career guidance to students by supporting STEM events with schools in the North West who are committed to providing a structured approach cyber security in education. Their incredible efforts meet the Bronze Criteria formally recognised by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC). We are committed to supporting the schools’ journeys to progressing onto reaching their Silver and Gold awards.

Space Camp

The Northrop Grumman Foundation sponsors UK students and teachers to attend a once in a life time week-long Space camp in Alabama, USA along with more than 100 other participants from around the world.

Building and launching rockets, experiencing weightlessness in an astronaut-training simulator and simulated space travel preparation are all part of the Space Camp experience for a specially selected group of students from the UK.

At the same time teachers attend the Space Academy for Educators, a programme designed to provide them with the tools and resources to enhance how they demonstrate STEM concepts in their classrooms.
